Film: “By the Grace of God”
October 19, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 9:30 pm
Leading writer/director François Ozon (Frantz, In the House, Potiche, Swimming Pool, 8 Women) won the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Bear) at this year’s Berlin Film Festival with By the Grace of God, the urgent and heartfelt the story of three adult men who band together to expose the stifling code of silence that continues to enable a priest who abused them as boys. Alexandre (Melvil Poupaud, Laurence Anyways, Time to Leave), a forty-something family man with repressed memories, still devout, goes to the Church to ask them to reform. But when he is stonewalled, he files a claim with the police, which leads to other men coming forward with similar testimony. François (Denis Ménochet, Custody), a hotheaded atheist, wants to make the Church pay. Emmanuel (Swann Arlaud), a loner existing on the fringes of society, is reluctant to speak. Their experiences powerfully illustrate the varying effects that the trauma of abuse causes to individuals and their families for years. Ozon’s gripping drama is based on a true story that is an ongoing scandal in France, which led to a conviction in March 2019. (Fully subtitled)
