Breaking the Silence: Healing the Shame of Male Survivors of Sexual Victimization

DATE: Friday, April 24, 2015

Time: 9am to 4:30pm

A full day training for clinicians, social workers, advocates, and staff who want more information on working with male survivors of sexual abuse.

Overall Goals for this Workshop:

1. To increase understanding of the incidence of male sexual victimization and the emotional/psychological sequelae of abuse

2. To identify the myths that create misunderstanding and blocks to seeking help

3. To increase understanding of the role of the psychotherapist in facilitating healing for male survivors of sexual victimization

4. To increase effectiveness in providing psychotherapy to male survivors

5. To understand from a survivor's perspective what are the most helpful aspects of providing hope, healing and support and therapeutic help to clients

6. To identify what each of us can do to help prevent future victimization of boys and men

Presenters:

Howard Fradkin Phd,LICDC-CS has counseled over 1500 male survivors as a Psychologist and as Co-Chairperson of the MaleSurvivor Weekends of Recovery, and trained over 2,500 colleagues on male sexual victimization. Dr. Fradkin's first book, Joining Forces: Empowering Male Survivors to Thrive, was published by Hay House in November, 2012.

Sharon Imperato, LMHC: has been working in the field of sexual trauma for over ten years, is Rape Crisis Trained and is currently the Manager of Clinical Services at the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC). Sharon has extensive experience in working with survivors of sexual victimization by providing individual, couples and group counseling. She has experience in working extensively with male survivors and their loved ones. She co-facilitates a male survivors' group in Boston and is a member of the MaleSurvivor Weekends of Recovery Facilitator team. Sharon is also an experienced trainer who facilitates training and conference presentations/workshops on various aspects of sexual trauma, including impacts and treatment of male survivors of sexual violence.
