Meet Brian Finnerty, LCSW, Founder & Therapist

I believe that the single most important factor in therapy is the relationship between a person and their counselor. I want you to know about me so that you can make an informed decision about whether I am the right person to support you in your work.

My clients want to find connection in their lives, but they are struggling to do so. I work with people who have found that other therapists don’t quite understand them. I am honored to be the open and non-judgmental professional they are seeking. My clients have faced stigma, limited family support, depression, anxiety or trauma while navigating the complexities of sexuality, gender and relationships. Some have lost important relationships due sexual urges or behaviors that feel out of control.

I believe that everyone wants to connect with others. Whether it is socially, romantically or sexually, we all strive for basic human connections. This can be highly rewarding but also challenging. I am passionate about helping people to express their sexual identity in a way that is true to themselves. For those in the LGBTQ+ community and those who have struggled with compulsive sexual behaviors there can be unique barriers to human connection which require someone with professional and personal experiences to help them navigate. You may be looking for someone to help you explore, grow and become more comfortable in your own skin. You may be seeking support as you navigate the continual process of ‘coming out’ across your lifetime. You may be seeking help to understand your sexual urges which feel out of your control. Using Cognitive Behavior Therapy through a person-affirming lens, I will help you to identify your goals and take steps toward achieving them.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I have worked in the mental health field for over a decade in a variety of roles ranging from case management to counselor to program director. I graduated from Drew University with my BA in Psychology and John Jay College of Criminal Justice with my MA in Forensic Mental Health Counseling.

My interests and professional experiences have always tended toward the area of human sexuality with a focus on individuals who are frequently under-served and misunderstood. This includes those who have lived through the criminal justice system, individuals living with persistent mental illnesses or intellectual disabilities and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

I pride myself on my caring and person-centered approach to therapy. I treat individuals and help them achieve their goals, rather than treating diagnoses or criminal records. I use humor and genuine human curiosity liberally in my work.
