Biography

Michael S. Lang, M.A., LCPC, CSAT provides psychotherapy to adults and adolescents as well as couples, and enjoys working with people diverse in ethnicity, culture, sexual identity and orientation.  His experiences are well-rounded through working in a variety of clinical settings including inpatient psychiatric, community mental health, crisis unit, and private practice.

Mr. Lang specializes in working with male and female adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (including abuse by the clergy) and issues which often arise from those experiences, such as the full range of Dissociative Disorders (including Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DID) and Complex PTSD.  Due to being touched by it through his work and realizing the prevalence of these issues in our society, Mr. Lang is an advocate for the prevention of child sexual abuse, sex trafficking, sexual assault, domestic violence and any gender-related violence.  His work recognizes early trauma as well as the relational and attachment difficulties which often follow, as well as concurrent difficulties such as emotional dysregulation, self-injury and eating disorders.  He also recognizes the special needs of those who partner with survivors, an area not well-covered in either the research literature or treatment venues.

Additionally Mr. Lang treats men and women suffering from sexual addictions and sex & love addictions, having trained as a Certified Sexual Addictions Therapist (CSAT) with Dr. Patrick Carnes’ group.  He also meets with couples to help guide them through difficulties arising from addiction and betrayal.  While increasing needed structure and adding outside work (such as Twelve Step meetings and possibly groups) is important, Mr. Lang recognizes multiple elements factoring into creating the “flawed solution” of addiction and so brings the same level of attention to the presence of traumas, relational issues and family dynamics as he does in the rest of his work.

Besides being informed by current approaches in Trauma and Addictions, Mr. Lang’s approach with all of his clients is grounded in relational and attachment perspectives, is characteristically very collaborative and quite empathic, and seeks to create safety and an effective working relationship.  He believes mindfulness and awareness in ourselves and in our relationships can facilitate our healing.  He holds a great respect for the importance of spirituality in people’s lives, and appreciates the healing quality of humor.  Mr. Lang believes that his clients hold important keys to their growth and well-being, and hopes to walk with them in their healing journey and to be a “guide on the side” where he can.
